London Calling
Former Jimmy Choo Designer Steps Out On Her Own

If it really is all about location, location, location, the footwear shop Beatrix Ong is clearly sitting pretty. The store, named after the designer and owner, is a mere stone’s throw away from the infamous Saville Row area in London, near Piccadilly Circus. ImageBurlington Arcade is such a unique location steeped in history," Ong says. That sense of history is important inspiration for the designer, who, prior to going out on her own, worked at Harper’s Bazaar before taking a designing job with Jimmy Choo. For her own line of footwear, Ong draws inspiration from her travels as well as “plenty of nods to royalty and Britishness.” “With shoes,” she says, “there are so many elements that have to work in order for the shoe to be functional; I enjoy the challenge of combining this with making something beautiful.” Not only is Ong a masterful shoemaker, she’s a prolific one. In addition to participating in Fair Trade projects, she produces close to 80 styles annually, along with a small collection of handbags. Here are a few of her most recent standouts.

Price:
Retails for £388

Ong calls this “a smart, point shoe with an unusual strap detail. Despite platforms and chunky heels being the current trend, our customers come back to us, for they know we are not led by trends and there is always something for the loyal pointed toe/stiletto heel lover. They buy into Christy because it offers something more than a plain high heel, taking them from the office to drinks after work and beyond.”

Reve was created as a sheer luxury item for myself, because I travel so much and often on my own. I needed something that made me feel at home instantly when I retire to my hotel room. Customers love the classic style with the quirky embroidery. It makes a great gift.
