Tameron Reynolds, buyer for Terra Firma

Wolky, Söfft Make Mark In Albuquerque
College-Age Consumers Demand “Funky” Comfort Footwear

In Albuquerque, N.M., Tameron Reynolds, buyer for Terra Firma, is finding that comfort footwear isn’t just the vogue among her older customers. “Our biggest store [there are two locations] is in Knob Hill,” Reynolds tells WSAToday.com. “It’s a really funky neighborhood, probably the funkiest and diverse [in Albuquerque]. We get a lot of people, from young college kids to our time-and-time-again Dansko customer. It’s a really wide range.” The one thing on their collective shopping agenda? High-end, Euro comfort shoes.

This fall, she says, comfort reigned supreme in sleeker, fashion-forward designs. “We noticed that a lot more heels are selling. I think people are buying more heels than they used to. They’re going away from more of the clunky clog look into the comfy high-heel look. We scaled back on Danskos and carried their staple items and tried out a bunch of new brands. We sold a ton of high-fashion brands this year.” Going forward into spring, she’s looking forward to bursts of color to entice customers. “I’m bringing in a lot of shoes in bright yellows and oranges,” she says. Even though metallics outshone themselves this fall, Reynolds is “staying away from [them]” this spring. “I think it’s on its way out.” Here’s a look at what was in this fall.

“It’s a flat boot that laces up the back. I think it filled the void. It was one of those boots you could wear with a pair of jeans. That lacing up in the back gave it a feminine touch. It looked great with skirts and dresses.”

“It has crinkle leather with a little wing tip that comes up the back. It comes up to a high calf and it has a cute little rounded toe. They were adorable boots.”

“This tall boot was great because it had a really wide calf opening. We had a bunch of Pikolinos boots that did really well for fall.”

Söfft did really well for us. Their heels did really well. The Gayle did really well. So did the Camilla, the Pilar patent flat and the Gabriella. Black did really well and so did aubergine.

Price:
Retails for $110

“It’s the staple Dansko clog. They’re really well-known. When the owner of this store started this store that’s pretty much all he carried. This started out as a clog store, and though we’re not [just a clog store] anymore, we’re always going to carry them. I don’t think clogs are ever going to go out. I would definitely say the fuzzier clog did not do as well for us. Specialty clogs didn’t do as well for us. The four top colors are cabrio cordovan, black, oiled brown and black.”

Retails for $145

“It comes in some really cool colors. We had that in a couple metallics that did really well. It was a black and a copper metallic. They’re so comfortable and some of our older clients really like them because they’re kinda funky but not over-the-top.”
