The Right Staff Finding Great Employees isn’t Easy—but it Can be Done Savvy retailers will want to attend “Take the Mystery Out of Hiring Great Employees,” a seminar being held Wednesday durng The WSA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Kathryn Dager, founder and president of Provitivity, Inc. and an internationally recognized speaker, promises to reveal helpful hints on how any retailer can make sure she’s hiring the cream of the crop. Here are a few pointers to get you started! 1) The first mistake many store owners making is in “aiming first.” “When hiring, you must figure out what you’re looking for, instead of taking a ready, fire then aim approach. The issue is that most people don’t really know what they’re looking for, then end up looking for people with personalities similar to their own, which doesn’t work. They need to see the skills and values that they can’t live without.”
2) And what are some things employers shouldn’t live without? “One very simple thing to keep in mind is that eye contact in the interview is important, because you can’t trust someone who won’t look you in the eye. This is practical information, but it’s absolutely true. One thing an employer can’t live without is honesty. It’s a primary skill, so determining honesty is of the utmost importance.”
3) “You also want a sense of someone’s stability. You need to be able to sense a person’s physical inner pace. If someone is very jumpy, if you get five or six people with that same personality in one small space, you’ll get blood on the walls. And if you have an environment where the pace ebbs and flows, as you usually do in retail, if your employees are very hyper they’ll go crazy during the down moments.”
