Florida Fashionistas Find Cool Shoes in College Town BOOT REQUESTS POURING IN AT TALLAHASSEE STORE Crisp autumn leaves and falling snow are rarely seen in the college town of Tallahassee, Fla., so it’s tempting to think that the only footwear flying out of stores would be flip-flops. Not so, according to Polka Dot Shoes owner Jessica Frank. “Everyone here gets really excited when it’s winter time,” she tells WSAToday.com. “I’ve had more requests for boots than I know what to do with. I’ve had people come into my store wearing crazy fur boots. The fashionistas want to wear the trends no matter what.” Here’s what’s hot for Frank’s store right now.
Emerald Cut
Price:
Retail range is $75 to $80
Why It's A Top Seller:
“I call this my holiday pump,” Frank says. “Green is a hot color this season, and there are so many more colors available than last winter, which was all about brown and animal print. This season you can dress up an all-black outfit with a pair of bright shoes. This is also a great shoe for my customers because it has a smoky topaz jewel on the front, and embellishment has done really well for me. This is simply a great party shoe.”
Boot Cute
Price:
Retails for $100
Why It's A Top Seller:
“This is one of the most beautiful boots I’ve ever seen,” Frank gushes. “It’s got a vintage style, which has been good for my store overall this season. People often ask if we’re a vintage boutique, and I have to explain that everything is new. This boot has a flirty ruffle and a fairly low heel, so it’s very wearable. And everyone is buying it, from 13-year-olds to one middle-aged woman who was buying it for her mother.”
Easy Being Green
Price:
Retails for $50
Why It's A Top Seller:
“Tweed has been big for everyone, whether they sell apparel or footwear,” Frank says. “This has a squared-off toe, which is always flattering, and the green tweed is a little more unusual. I love that we’re seeing more color in footwear this season. You can wear this with jeans or, because of the closed toe, it looks great with black tights and a cute skirt.”
Foot Frosting
Price:
Retail range is $110 to $130
Why It's A Top Seller:
“This is one of the best pumps I’ve seen in a while,” Frank observes. “You can wear it with anything, and the upper is made of really soft leather. People tell me this shoe doesn’t give them blisters, and they actually expect it to be uncomfortable because it’s so cute. Even the bottom of the shoe is pretty. Irregular Choice decorates the soles with little fairies and flowers. People are willing to pay more for shoes like this because, even though no one sees the bottoms of the shoes, you know you’re getting something unique that you won’t see at the mall.”
School Fuel
Price:
Retails for $55
Why It's A Top Seller:
“I personally love all Rocket Dogs because they’re famous for both comfort and style,: Frank says. “These are as durable as a gym shoe, but they’re still feminine and cute. I thought an older crowd would be buying these, but they’ve mostly been selling to college-age kids. We have three major campuses around here that are very spread out, so girls want something they can wear to class every day that still has a little style. And because these have no laces, they’re easy to slip on with jeans or, if you’re in college, sweatpants.”
Fresh Shell
Pearl by Pink Studio
Price:
Retails for $60
Why It's A Top Seller:
“These are super cute in gray suede,” Frank says. “This shoe has a little more durability and sturdiness than a ballerina flat, plus you can wear it with jeans. And because of the pearls, it’s not too casual. I’m seeing this on more sophisticated college students, girls in sororities or students who are going to interviews. The pearls add a touch of class.”
